History Of The Digital Camera

A digital camera which is also known as a digicam or by its popular term cam, is an electronic device that takes videos and/or phothos by recording the images using an electronic image sensor and stores the data on a micro card storage device unlike its predecessor that used film to store the videos or photos. Almost all the digital cameras that are currently being used can record sounds, moving videos and still photos at the same time. It may be a common and popular gadget nowadays but it has not been always like this.

The history of the digital camera dates back in 1960s when the television technology, computer progress and space exploration registered a blooming success. The modern digital camera technology is directly linked and related to the technology that was used for recording television.

Television, video cameras and digital cameras uses a charged coupled device also known as CCD to sense the light color and its intensity while recording. The CCD came along with the help of the first video tape recorder invented in 1951 and later researched in the Bing Crosby laboratories perfecting the system and responding to the needs with an improved version of it. At the same time the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA, upgraded their system that was used to explore and map the surface of the moon from using analog signals to digital signals . Since computer technology was advancing very fast, NASA was able to enhance the images and the videos that the space probes were sending with the help of the new and more powerfull computers. The are huge differences between the digital cameras and the film cameras. One of the advantages that comes along with it is that once you filmed something or taken a photo, you can immediately have a look at it, or edit it, while the older technology cannot provide such a feature. The lack of the magnetic band needed to store the informations is also a big benefit for everyone and made this gizmo popular amongst us.


Digital cameras can also be embedded on other devices such as mobile phones or newer and cooler PDAs. Even the Hubble Space Telescope itself is just a digital camera only built for certain specifications and needs, thus you can say that the telescope is just a specialized digital camera. The digital cameras are made in a wide range of sizes, prices and capabilities. Amateurs and professional photographers use bigger and more expensive digital cameras known as digital single-lens reflex camera for their capabilities and features, being more versatile then the ordinary ones. We can say that in the history of the digital camera, 21st century is the time when this gadget became available for everyone to buy, making it one of the most popular electronic device. Everyday there are newer and better digital cameras being presented to the market, and its highly possible that by the time you finished reading this article a new improved model already came out.
